Maximising Sports Ground Potential

Detailed preparatory work, quality communication, and specialist advice from experienced professionals who are well used to working together, is the key to sports clubs getting the most out of the development of their grounds

This message was reinforced to delegates at a successful "Positive Grounds" seminar held at Worcester Rugby Club's Sixways Stadium on Thursday 11 June led by a multi-disciplinary panel of speakers.

Rod Thomas and Cindy Bexfield, both of law firm, Harrison Clark LLP, explained how it was possible to protect club assets from unacceptable risk, structure borrowings from club members and overcome property law hurdles.

Raymond Blin and Michelle Stott, both of Sportoptima Limited emphasised the importance of making a project fit for purpose and the need to think widely in terms of possible partners for any development.

Paul Fong of planning development specialists, Hunter Page Planning Limited demonstrated how it was possible to work constructively to achieve planning consent in the face of apparent obstacles.

Will Silsby of Rabjohns LLP, business and tax advisers, focused on the tax implications of selling old grounds, the importance of having a clear idea of how the club might develop and the potential benefits of registration as a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC).

The delegates represented midlands-based football, rugby and cricket clubs as well as local authorities.

The seminar was introduced by Welsh rugby international, Chris Horsman, the former Worcester Warriors prop forward who spoke passionately about the importance of developing community sport.
